These regulations are aimed at presenting to members of the school community the general functioning of the Lycée Français La Pérouse in order to maintain the discipline essential to any educational endeavor.

To attain this goal, everyone must contribute through responsible daily behavior and respect of individual liberties for the smooth running of the school, thus guaranteeing the enrichment of all.

These School Rules must be fully respected in order to allow us all to live together in harmony and promote, with everyone's conscious effort, true autonomy.

Student Responsibility
Students are responsible at all times for their own personal conduct and conformance with the School Rules.

Responsibility Of Teachers, Staff, Director
They have the responsibility to explain the School Rules of conduct to their students, guiding them towards greater autonomy while using appropriate reminders as needed.

Parental Responsibility
They have the responsibility to carefully explain the School Rules to their children in order to facilitate understanding and show their accord with the educational team.
Students must have consistent information from the group of adults surrounding them. Incoherence can be perceived as an area of concern.

• Parents explain the rules to their child – in particular the
  notion of "respect''.
  
• Parents cooperate with the school in the event of disrespect by
  their child of the school rules.
  
• Each day parents give their child a well-balanced snack.
  
• Parents ensure a good study environment at home in the
  evenings.
  
• Parents bring their child to school on time.

The School Regulations "Règlement Intérieur" should be read at the beginning of the year to avoid reprimands.

School Hours
Preschool and Elementary levels
Classes are held from 8:30a.m. to 3:15p.m. Monday through Friday. School doors open at 8:15a.m. for lower grades. Students who arrive early must stay on the playground and not enter the classrooms. Before this time, children are not supervised and rooms remain closed.
Parents must pick-up their child(ren) from 3:15p.m. to 3:30p.m. for the elementary school. Parents arriving at the school after 3:30p.m. are asked to pick-up their child(ren) at the day-care center. Charges are in half-hour minimum increments.

Secondary level
The Lycée opens its doors at 8a.m. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:15a.m. to 2:50p.m., or to 3:50p.m. for the 8th through 12th grades. All students must be present 5 minutes before the start of classes. Certain practice tests for the BAC and SAT are given Saturday mornings. Schedules are conveyed to students and their families at the beginning of the school year. They may be changed according to teaching needs or in response to unforeseen situations, in which case changes will be brought to the attention of all concerned.

Elementary Classes
Except in the case of bad weather, after the morning recess and after lunch break, students must wait for their teacher in the play area reserved for their class.
From 3:15p.m. to 3:30p.m., except in bad weather, students must wait for their parents in the play area.

Secondary classes (6th to 8th grades)
Students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th must wait for their teachers in the courtyard at 8:10a.m., at the end of morning recess and at 1p.m.

Secondary classes (9th to 12th grades)
Only the students in grades 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th are authorized to go off-campus for lunch and leave the school during the morning recess, unless parents send their written objection to the Vice-Principal at the beginning of the year.

Traffic
Parents are asked to obey all California traffic laws.

Parents must not:

• double park
  
• park in front of garages
  
• use their car horn
  

Marin campus – Parents may use both parking lots but cannot park in the alleyway leading to the back parking lot. The half-circle must left available for the drop-off zone.
Attendance - Absences - Tardiness

Absences
It is required of students to regularly attend all classes scheduled for their grade, as well as, the activities chosen at the beginning of the year. Punctuality is a primary rule to observe.
The administration must be informed of any absence by 12:30p.m. that same day. Also, in order to be admitted into class, the student must present to his teacher (elementary school) or the school life office (secondary school) a letter from his/her parents justifying his/her absence.

After 3 consecutive days absent, the student must provide a medical certificate attesting that the return of the student involves no contagious risk.

Tardiness

• Preschool: Parents or guardian must accompany the child directly to the classroom and sign the daily attendance sheet.
  
• Elementary grades: Parents or guardian must accompany the child to the reception area to get a late note and then take the child to the classroom.
  
• Secondary grades: Students will not be admitted into class without a late note issued by the school life office.
• For all students, frequent tardiness will lead to disciplinary action.

Off-campus Authorization – Excuses
During study periods, or in the case of a teacher being absent at the last minute or for the last class of the day, students (secondary classes: 10th, 11th, 12th grades) may leave the school grounds provided that their parents have given written authorization at the beginning of the year.

Students in the 10th, 11th and l2th grades are allowed to leave the Lycée campus during recess and lunch time. (Parents who do not want their children to go off campus can write a letter to the School Counselor).

Students from 6th through 8th grades absolutely may not leave the Lycée between 8:15a.m and 3p.m. Students in the 9th grade must bring a written authorization from their parents to leave the Lycée campus during recess and lunch time.

Any excuse from participating in physical education class (swimming included) must be authorized by prior parental request. In the case of repeated requests to be excused or of permanent non-attendance, a medical certificate is required.

In the primary school, if for any reason a student must leave the school early, the student's parent or guardian must pick up the child in his/her classroom and sign in at the reception desk.

Under no circumstances may a student be taken from the school during the day without the administration given prior notice. Except in the case of illness or urgency duly justified by the parents, students are expected to be present for the entire school year. Failure to do so could result in their readmission being refused.

Medical appointments should be made outside of normal school hours.
The administration reserves the right to refuse a student permission to leave a class during the day, if the reason given does not appear to be of utmost urgency.

Student Dress and Conduct
Good behavior is an essential component to all education.

Dress Code
Students must come to the school in proper attire. If this basic rule is not observed, the principal or his representative reserves the right to refuse entry to any student.

Gym wear
Students must appear at physical education class in T-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts and tennis shoes; in winter, sweat pants are recommended. A student who forgets his/her gym clothes will be disciplined.

Conduct
A polite attitude and use of proper language are expected from students towards all school personnel, their friends and any person met in the school or its immediate area.

Respect for School Property
Students must be responsible for the cleanliness of the school (picking up in the classrooms, corridors, etc.).

Particular attention, starting at the youngest age, must be given to respecting school furniture, property and supplies left at the disposal of students. Damage done intentionally to the grounds or due to the improper use of equipment will warrant disciplinary action, and parents will be held financially responsible for repairs. Students must keep track of their belongings (books, clothes, lunch boxes, etc., and not let them lie around in the hallways.
Parents are strongly advised to put name tags on their children's belongings. Lost and found items must be claimed. The Lycée cannot be held responsible for the exchange, loss or theft of objects or money belonging to students.

For safety, hygienic or disciplinary reasons, it is forbidden:

• to smoke inside the Lycée or in its immediate surroundings.
  
• to chew gum
  
• to bring to the Lycée (as a general rule) any valuables, as well as, any items which could be dangerous
  
• to use in the school any item not required by school activities (radios, magazines, walkman, cell phones).
• Students are reminded that the use and possession of drugs and alcoholic beverages are strictly forbidden, as well as, sexual harassment and violent behavior.
• Students found committing an infraction will be subject to the punishment prescribed by California State Law.

Public Spaces
Whenever students use city grounds (parks, pools, etc.) they are asked to be courteous towards others using these spaces and respect property, as well as, all city regulations.

Campus Circulation
Students must move calmly and in an orderly fashion without running in the hallways or on the stairs. In class, games must be neither violent nor dangerous.

Lunch period
Students in preschool, primary and middle school must bring their lunch to school unless planned otherwise or a hot lunch is ordered. A reminder, that if lunch time is to be a relaxation period, then general cleanliness and good conduct must be followed.

The School Rules must be respected by the entire school, students as well as adults.
Its main objective is to guarantee maximum safety on the campus and to create a productive and pleasant atmosphere in which to study.

• respect for others, language used:
  Adults as well as children must watch their language and respect each others' words.
  
• respect the property of others and that of the school:
  Everyone is responsible for the environment and in keeping it clean in every area. (table clean-up, picking up papers, etc.). In the same manner, collective school property must be used properly to assure its long term usage by all.
  
• on the playground:
  Refer to rules already listed.
  

Punctuality
It is important to arrive to class on time in order to take full advantage of the school day, and, in particular, not to upset the work of others and the concentration of classmates who arrived at the proper time.
In order to facilitate correct recording of attendance, we ask all students who arrive late to stop at the reception and request a late pass before going to class.
All late arrivals are noted. If tardiness is inexcusable or occurring too often (3 in 2 weeks or 5 per month):

• Initially the teacher will contact the family and inform the Director.
  
• If tardiness is more frequent, the Director or Administration will ask to meet with the parents in person.
  
• As a last recourse, the Administration will once again request a meeting with the parents and temporary suspension (1-3 days) will be given.
  The same rules apply to all personnel.

These updated school rules are currently in use (school year 2000-2005).

Structures
Play time on structures are determined by class and by day as follows:
Monday 1st & 2nd
Tuesday 3rd, 4th & 5th
Wednesday 1st & 2nd
Thursday 3rd, 4th & 5th
Friday 1st & 2nd

Reminder: The playground remains an area where children can relax, therefore, a few rules are to be followed:

• no playing with wood chips (protection in case of a fall)
• no jumping from the top of the structures
• no sitting on horizontal ladder
• no climbing up the slide
• no inappropriate behavior for oneself and others
  Courtyard
• no ball games (due to limited space)
• foam balls are allowed around the basketball court
• violent running games are not allowed
• children must ask authorization of the adult in charge to go to the restroom and must be accompanied by another child

Clean-Up After Lunch
A clean-up effort is organized each day:
Monday 1st grade
Tuesday 2nd grade
Wednesday 3rd grade
Thursday 4th grade
Friday 5th grade

Students are encouraged to respect the courtyard rules or necessary disciplinary action will be taken. Parents will be called upon for repeated disregard of the rules by their children.

General Principles
School rules must be respected by the whole school. In this way, we can benefit from a school with an excellent atmosphere in which to study and enjoy ourselves.

• Respect for others, adults, and students.
• Respect for oneself.
• Respect for the property of others, that of the school, and also, one's own personal belongings.

• Listen to others and the teacher.
• Do not speak at the same time as others.
• Raise one's hand and wait one's turn to speak.
• Be kind, do not hurt, do not mock, do not fight.

• Do not use bad or insulting language.

• I keep my belongings tidy, for example: my schoolbooks, my school backpack, and my jacket.
• I ask permission before using someone else's belongings and I return them promptly.
• I only bring to school that which is necessary : no toys nor money, except for a small amount (i.e. on "croissant'' day or for a field trip).
• I take care of school materials, especially books and furniture.
• In the Classroom
• I do not copy and I do not cheat. I do not disturb my friends.
• I agree to share or to lend.
• I never run in the classroom.
• I raise my hand and wait for my turn to speak.
• I speak in French during French classes, and in English during English classes.
• I keep the classroom and my belongings clean and tidy.In the Rest Rooms
• I keep them clean and I flush the toilet.
• I do not play there and stay there as short a time as possible.
  
  In Common Areas: library, corridors, picnic area, gymnasium
  
• In the library I am silent, I do not eat, I take care of the books, I do not disarrange them, and I return them promptly.
  
• In the corridors, I do not run, I'm quiet and stay in line.
• In the picnic area, I eat properly and I do not waste food. I do not throw anything on the ground and I pick up anything that I have dropped.
• In the music room and in the gymnasium, I respect the equipment and I follow the instructions of my teachers.
  
  On the Playground and Recreation Area
• I stay in the authorized areas.
• I ask for permission to go out.
• I am friendly and polite with everyone. I use proper language (no swearing or name-calling). I invite others to join in my games.
• I do not disturb the recess or the games of others. I never fight. I share the equipment with others.
• I pay great attention neither to hurt myself nor to hurt someone else. (For example: I do not throw rocks, I am very careful close to the swings and on the climbing frames, I do not play soccer).
• As soon as recess is over, I collect up all my belongings and I get in line.
  
  During Movement in Groups
• I do not trail behind. I keep orderly and I make as little noise as possible.
  During Fieldtrips:
• I never go far from the group without asking permission from an adult.
• I am polite with everyone I meet and I respect the rules of the places I visit.
• I pay particular attention to the instructions given by adults, for my own safety and that of others.

Discipline
Disciplinary action will be taken for either bad conduct or failure to do work. Parents are always notified of such actions.
Failure in the application of these regulations will result in one of the following steps:

• reprimand by the teacher (the 3rd time leads to a warning)
• warning, with additional homework: this indicates serious wrongdoing. The 3rd warning leads to a two-day suspension.
• temporary suspension declared by the Principal (from 2 to 8 days)
• In very serious cases, the School Council is called together as a disciplinary body to reach a decision regarding permanent expulsion of a student, proposed by the principal.

• Students are responsible for their own conduct.
  
• In the interests of others, they respect these rules. They should go to a teacher if they witness one of the serious rules (safety or language related) being broken by another student.
  
  Teachers and the Director
  
• Teachers and the Director explain the rules, in particular the notion of "respect''.
  
• They are responsible for discipline and the well-being of everyone on campus. They take disciplinary action, if necessary.
  
  Parents
  
• Parents explain the rules to their child – in particular the notion of "respect''.
  
• They cooperate with the school in the event of disrespect by their child of the school rules.
  
• Each day they give their child a well-balanced snack.
  
• They ensure a good study environment at home in the evenings.
  
• They bring their child to school on time.
  
  
  Punctuality
  We arrive on time in order:
  

• to maximize class time and time spent with our friends.
  
• to not disturb others.
• All students arriving late must go by the office to ask for an authorization pass to enter the class. The adult who brings the student to school must then accompany him/her to the classroom.
• All late arrivals are noted. If late arrivals of a student are unjustified or frequent (3 in two weeks or 5 in a month) :
  
• First time: The teacher contacts the family and informs the Director.
  
• Second time: The Director or the Administration summons the parents. Late arrivals are mentioned in the Bulletin.
  
• Third time: The Administration summons the parents again and a temporary suspension (1- 3 days) is put into effect. It is recorded in the school files.

Disciplinary Actions
In case of disregard or disrespect of the school rules, the following measures can be put into force according to the seriousness and the frequency of the fault(s) committed:

• Reminder of the rule and warning given to the student by the teacher.
  
• Teacher-student discussion with disciplinary action:
  - extra work to be carried out during free time at school or at home;
  - for the younger students, loss of 5 minutes of playtime.
  
• The teacher can decide to inform the parents and/or the Director.
  
• Temporary expulsion from class (30 minutes): The student is sent to another class with work to carry out. The parents and the Director of the school are informed.
  
• Teacher/Student/Director conference: disciplinary action is taken, a note or letter of warning is sent to the parents.
  
• Summons of the parents by the Teacher, the Director or the Administration: it is then decided to give either a suspension of several days, or 10 to 25 hours of work to be done for the school outside of normal school hours.
  

If, after 2 disciplinary actions of the last type have been taken during the same year, the behavior of the student is deemed unacceptable, his/her final expulsion is then pronounced by the Administration of the Lycée.
