Safety procedures at the lycée

Earthquakes, fires and other major disasters
In order to be ready for emergencies such as earthquakes, fires and other major disasters, the Lycée has an Emergency Disaster and Incident Preparedness Plan. This plan is updated every year and given to the personnel.

Below are the major actions to be taken in case of an emergency in the Bay Area and at the Lycée :

Communication

Radio and television
Listen to local radios: KFRC 91FM, KCBS 740AM or watch television KRON on Channel 4.
If the San Francisco School District closes its schools, the San Francisco campus will also close.
If the Larkspur School District closes its schools, the Corte Madera campus will also close.

Campus communication
Both campuses are equiped with a cellular phone and a radio that will allow transmission of messages to the French Consulate, as well as communication between campuses and, if needed, with hospitals, fire departments and ambulance services.

School bus service
Parents with children taking the school bus should call the bus company before leaving, in order to be sure the buses are in service:

South 1
LAIDLAW SAN JOSE (Ernest)
408.971.3466 or 415.860.8869

South 2
BONJOUR COMPANY(Lili)
510.919.0065 or 415.740.1006

North
LAIDLAW RICHMOND (Marin)
510.237.6677

If the decision to close the Lycée should occur after the bus has left in the morning, students will be taken care of on the San Francisco campus and the telephone tree will be used to let parents know the time of the students' return.

Telephone service
DO NOT TO CALL THE LYCEE in case of a major disaster. It is extremely important to free the phone lines (if circuits are functioning).

If local phones are working, call:
(415) 661-0945 in San Francisco and (415) 924-2849 in Corte Madera,
a recorded message will be playing.

Back-up telephone service
The Lycée International de Los Angeles will be our telephone back-up in case local telephone communication is momentarily interrupted. Their telephone number is (818) 994 2961.The appropriate messages will be recorded.

DO NOT FORGET TO KEEP THESE PHONE NUMBERS IN YOUR CARS, WALLETS, AT HOME AND AT WORK.

Earthquakes

Emergency Preparedness
An Emergency Disaster Plan is in place for each of our buildings with specific teams and responsibilities assigned. In the event of an earthquake, all personnel on the premises must remain where they are and take care of the children until the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) Director gives them authorization to leave.

All personnel have had CPR or First Aid training. The Lycée invited professionnals to give one-day "disaster preparedness" training to all our personnel during the in-service days in September. A number of employees have also undergone the Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams (NERT) training organized in all cities.

Supplies

Individual earthquake backpacks containing dry food, water and other emergency supplies are stored in each room. We have also equipped each room with a "Teacher's Bag" containing additional supplies and a First Aid Kit that remains there at all times. In case of emergency, students and teachers will each carry their own bags.

In addition to individual earthquake backpacks stored in each room, emergency supplies and updated student lists can be found in the outside shelters (located next to the sports' storage shed on the basketball court in San Francisco, and in the big storage containers in the picnic area in Marin). Every year supplies are added to the existing reserve.

Every month, there is an emergency response drill monitored by the local fire departement with the students in case of a fire or earthquake.

Emergency Procedure
  • During an earthquake - compliance by everyone with the "duck, cover and hold" response. Teachers and staff try to keep the children calm and wait for the EOC Director's instructions.

  • Designated adults check for broken electrical wires or gas leaks that might start a fire. Electrical, gas and/or water safely shut off, if necessary.

  • Evacuation - Only upon instruction from the EOC Director.

  • Search & Rescue - once the entire school has been assembled outside. If anyone is missing, the search and rescue and the medical teams will go back into the buildings, while other adults supervise and calm the children.

  • If the situation is severe enough that parents are unable to pick up their children, we will be responsible for bringing the children to the "Panhandle" on Masonic in San Francisco and to the Chapel of the Hill across from San Clemente Park in Marin. The cities will set up shelters at these locations.

  • Authorized persons will be allowed to pick-up students in an organized manner at the front entrance on Ashbury Street in SF and on Golden Hind Passage in Marin. No one else other than the persons listed on the emergency form will be allowed to pick-up the children. Be sure the emergency forms are updated, if changes happen during the school year.

  • PLEASE REMAIN CALM! The procedures mentioned above have been set-up in order to ensure your children's safety and security.

Your child's safety is our first concern.
