School Council

Mission
As in public schools in France, the School Council is responsible for the everyday life of the school, pedagogical issues, and decisions affecting the students' life at school, such as the number of hours of class, elective courses, calendar, school regulations and safety.

Composition
The School Council is composed of 21 members: 6 parents, 6 teachers elected from each campus, plus 3 students elected from among the 8th through 12th grade delegates, the heads of the campuses, senior administration personnel, the French Cultural Attaché and the representative of the French population abroad.

Procedure

The School Council has 3 or 4 scheduled meetings per school year. These are usually held in French. With advance notice, a translator may be provided. The minutes are then translated into English and posted on each campus. The Parent Delegates present issues raised by the parents on their campuses and report back to the parents at the next scheduled Room Parent meetings.

Parent Delegates are elected in October. All parents are invited to vote and to present themselves as candidates. We encourage you to submit your candidacy to the Administration.

The School Council minutes are available on the Lycee secure intranet http://secure.lelycee.org/checkgroup.php?lg=

School Board

Mission

As in other American private schools, the School Board is responsible for the general and long-term policies of real estate, fundraising, business and financial matters.

Composition

The 20-member board is composed of elected parents and staff members, honorary members from the community-at-large, plus representatives of the French government : the Consul General, the Head of the Chancellery, and the Cultural Attaché. The senior administration personnel (Headmaster and General Director, Business Manager and Director of development, Communication Manager) and the Representative of the French Population Abroad also attend the meetings, however, they do not have a vote.

Procedure

The Board of Directors meets monthly (usually in English). Once approved, minutes are posted on the school bulletin boards at both campuses and on the Lycee website. Elections are held at the Annual Meeting which takes place every year in October. Participation of all parents in the election, by voting in person or by proxy, is fundamental to the functioning of the school. The board has several committees, including Real Estate, Finance, Fundraising, Communication, etc. Twice a year, the Board of Directors organizes a meeting for all parents.

Committees

Parents are invited to participate on these committees. It is not necessary to be a member of the Board to do so. The request can be made to the Chair of the Committee. Elections are held at the Annual Meeting which takes place every year in October. Participation of all parents in the election, by voting in person or by proxy, is fundamental to the functioning of the school.

Room Parents
Each class elects two Room Parents. The elections are held at the end of September. The main role of the Room Parent is that of a communication link between the teachers, the parents and the administration. They also help in organizing and in taking an active part in the school festivities, field trips, and other activities.
Once every six weeks , Room Parents meet with the school. They also organize meetings among the parents of their respective classes.

The Board of Directors  minutes are available on the Lycée secure intranet http://secure/extranet/boardmeetingminutes.php?lg=

Parent-Teacher Meetings

Primary

Teachers schedule after school meetings with parents from 3:30p.m. to 7:30p.m. three times a year. At the first meeting, just after school starts, the teacher explains to parents in a group what the class will be doing during the year. The second and third meetings are individual sessions to review the child's progress. Childcare is provided for all of the scheduled Parent-Teacher meetings. With advance notice, a translator will be made available.
In addition, parents should feel free to schedule a meeting with the teacher whenever they feel the need.

Secondary
Teachers of the secondary level meet the parents individually twice a year (November and March). Parents may also meet any of them by requesting an appointment through the child's liaison book.
A general meeting with secondary teachers and parents is scheduled in September each school year.
