Frequently asked questions

What is the homework policy?

Homework is assigned regularly according to the grade level of the class.

Do the children have the opportunity to write creatively?

Creative writing is continually fostered and encouraged. The frequency depends on the age of the child.

How much outside reading is required ? How are the books chosen?

Students are consistently encouraged to read on their own from first through twelfth grade. The choice of books is monitored by the teachers. These books are usually classics chosen to compliment the core literature being taught at each level. A variety of book reports/projects are assigned these books throughout the school year.

How does the English program accommodate non-native speakers of English?

Students are placed in an ESL program in which the main goal is to develop communication, grammar, reading and writing skills. The curriculum is designed to enable the student to be mainstreamed into the regular English program by the following year.

Is my child reading and testing on the same level with his/her counterpart in
the American system?

Students skills are evaluated regularly by English teachers who have been trained in the American system. The success rate of graduates is comparable to that of students from American schools.

If my child transfers to an American school after attending the lycée, will he/she be behind, ahead or on target?

During the first two years of primary, your child may be slightly behind because English is introduced gradually, while French is emphasized. However, by the end of the primary cycle, students tend to score as well as, or better than their peers at American schools.

Do we have an opportunity to meet with the English teachers during the year?

Twice during the school year, parents have the opportunity to meet with English teachers for parent-teacher conferences. Appointments can be arranged for further consultation throughout the year if need be.

How can my child keep up in English if French is spoken at home?

Being immersed in the American culture outside of school has proven to give students ample opportunities to acquire English. Outside reading, in addition to the assigned homework, is also highly recommended.

If my child does not learn to read in English until the second semester of first grade, will he/she catch up with American students who start at the beginning of the first semester of first grade?

Yes, because the reading and study skills learned in French transfer to those learned in English. The staggered approach to learning two languages avoids confusion, and provides a way for students to assimilate and balance their language learning.

Are the students prepared only for the BAC or are they also able to take AP exams
as well as the SAT's?

Students in grades 11 and 12 are in AP English classes. They are prepared for the BAC and the AP exams. They are not required to take the AP exam, but may do so if they desire. The success rate of students taking the AP exams is excellent.
