Your Guide to Navigating Middle and High School Admissions in the International Track

Choosing the right middle or high school is a significant decision for both students and parents. It’s a step that shapes the future, setting the stage for academic success, personal growth, and global opportunities. At the Lycée Français de San Francisco, our International Track offers a unique education centered around the International Baccalaureate (IB) approach, designed to prepare students for college and beyond. Importantly, there is no French language requirement for this program, making it accessible to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This guide is designed to help both students and parents navigate the admissions process for the International Track at the Lycée, providing insights and practical tips to make the best choice together.

How to join the Lycée International Track

     1. Researching and Choosing the Right Program

  • The IB Approach: Central to the International Track is the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, which is known for its holistic and inquiry-based approach to education. The IB curriculum encourages students to think critically, engage with complex global issues, and develop a deep understanding of different cultures and perspectives. This approach not only prepares students for the academic challenges of higher education but also equips them with the skills needed to succeed in an interconnected world.
  • No French Language Requirement: One of the key features of the International Track at the Lycée is that it does not require proficiency in French. This program is ideal for students who are looking for a bilingual education but may not have prior experience with the French language. While students have the opportunity to learn French as part of the curriculum, the primary language of instruction is English.

  • Attend Information Sessions as a Family: The Lycée hosts admissions events specifically for families interested in the International Track. Look for us at a Middle or High School Fair, or attend an Open House to get an overview of the curriculum, extracurricular opportunities, and the overall student experience. Attending these sessions together allows both parents and students to assess whether this program is the right fit.

  • Explore Extracurricular Opportunities: Beyond academics, the International Track offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including Model United Nations, debate clubs, drama classes and various sports. Students can also start (or continue) German, Mandarin or Spanish on top of the French language. These activities are important not only for enriching the student experience, but also for developing leadership skills and global perspectives.

     2. Application Submission

  • Get in touch with our Admission Team: We’d love to hear from you - whether you fill out our inquiry form on the website, send us an email, schedule a call... Nathalie Ferino and Alain Lecloux, our experienced Associates, work closely together to provide personalized support and guidance to prospective families throughout the application process. Mireille Sagne, our Director of Admissions, brings her extensive knowledge and passion for education to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for all. Together, they are here to help you every step of the way as you explore what makes the Lycée a unique and vibrant learning community.
  • Complete the Online Application: Whether you submit an online application through our website, or by choosing the Lycée on the Ravenna common application platform, our dedicated Admission team can walk you through it. Parents and students should work together to provide detailed information, including academic records and teacher recommendations. Highlight your achievements, interests, and motivation for joining the Lycée International Track.

  • Submit an introduction video : This is a chance for the student to demonstrate their communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and enthusiasm for international education. Students should be prepared to discuss their academic interests, extracurricular activities, and achievements.

     3. Interviews and Assessments

  • Prepare for Family and Student Interviews: As part of the admissions process, we conduct an interview with the family, which the student is also welcome to attend. This is an opportunity for families to express their interest in our program and to share how the Lycée's mission aligns with their educational goals.

  • Provide report cards and a teacher evaluation form: Report cards provide insight into the student's academic strengths and areas that may need support. The teacher evaluation form offers qualitative information about the student's behavior in a classroom setting, such as their participation, motivation, collaboration with peers, and adherence to school rules. They provide a more holistic understanding of how the student learns and interacts with others. By looking at report cards and evaluations over a period of time, schools can observe trends in the student’s performance, identifying consistent areas of strength or concern, rather than relying on a single assessment or test score.

  • Spend a day shadowing: The student will spend a day shadowing their potential future classmates. It’s a great way for them to experience life at the Lycée firsthand and help them feel involved in the decision-making process.

     4. Financial Aid and Scholarships

  • Explore Financial Assistance Together: The Lycée is committed to making our programs accessible to a diverse range of families. We offer financial aid and scholarships to qualifying families. Parents and students should discuss financial aid options and complete the necessary forms by the specified deadlines. Our admissions team is available to guide families through this process.

     5. Decision and Enrollment

  • Review Acceptance Letters: After careful review of applications, interviews, and assessments, the Lycée will notify families of admissions decisions. If accepted into the International Track, the family will receive an offer letter with details on how to complete the enrollment process.

  • Secure Enrollment: To secure a place in the International Track, a deposit is required. This deposit will be applied toward tuition. It’s important for both parents and students to feel confident in their decision before moving forward with enrollment.

Whats Sets the International Track Apart

The International Track at the Lycée offers students a unique pathway to becoming global citizens, grounded in the IB approach and leading to dual diploma graduation. Here are some of the key benefits:

  1. Global Perspective
  • The IB Framework: The IB curriculum is designed to foster a global perspective by encouraging students to explore and understand issues from multiple viewpoints. Through inquiry-based learning, students engage with topics that are both locally relevant and globally significant, preparing them to become informed and active global citizens.
  • Cultural Immersion: The International Track promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity, encouraging students to appreciate and learn from different cultures. This immersion is supported by the bilingual education model and diverse classroom experiences, as well as international travel opportunities that allow students to experience other cultures firsthand.
  1. Dual Diploma Graduation
  • US High School diploma and Bilingual International Baccalaureate (IB): This dual diploma not only opens doors to universities worldwide but also signifies a comprehensive and rigorous academic experience that is respected globally. The dual diploma reflects the Lycée’s commitment to providing an education that balances the best of international and French educational traditions.
  1. Comprehensive College Counseling Program
  • Four-Year College Counseling: The Lycée’s unique four-year college counseling program begins in 9th grade, guiding students through every step of the college preparation and application process. From self exploration to crafting compelling college essays, our dedicated counselors work closely with each student to ensure they are well-prepared for a higher education that best fits them and their dreams.
  • Successful College Placements: Our students have consistently been accepted to prestigious universities around the world, including Ivy League schools in the United States, top-tier universities in the UK, and elite institutions across Europe and Canada. This track record of success speaks to the quality of our program and the readiness of our graduates for the challenges of higher education.
  1. Global Learning Program
  • Trips Abroad to Foster Global Mindedness: The Lycée’s Global Learning Program offers students the opportunity to participate in international trips, allowing them to experience different cultures firsthand. These trips are more than just educational tours—they are immersive experiences that align with the IB philosophy of fostering global mindedness, enhancing language skills, and deepening students' understanding of global issues. Whether visiting historical landmarks, engaging in cultural exchanges, or participating in international conferences, these trips play a crucial role in shaping students into well-rounded, globally-conscious individuals.

Preparing for the Transition

Starting middle or high school in the International Track is a significant step. Here’s how parents and students can work together to prepare for this transition:

  1. Encourage Independence
  • Develop Self-Management Skills: Students should work on building strong organizational and time-management skills. The International Track is rigorous, and students will need to balance their academic workload with extracurricular activities.
  • Foster Responsibility: Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and be proactive in seeking help when needed.
  1. Discuss Global Issues Together
  • Engage in Conversations: Parents and students should discuss current global issues and think critically about the world around them. This will prepare students for the types of discussions they’ll have in the International Track.
  • Read and Learn Together: Explore books, articles, and documentaries on international topics. This shared learning experience can deepen understanding and spark meaningful conversations.

The Importance of Community at the Lycée

At the Lycée, we believe that a strong, supportive community is essential to student success. The International Track is not just about academics; it’s about building connections with peers, teachers, and the broader community. We encourage families to get involved, attend school events, and connect with other parents and students. This sense of community is what makes the Lycée a special place for students to learn and grow.
