PART I : "THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON YOUNG CHILDREN: THE EVOLUTION OF TODAY’S DIGITAL NATIVES"

The second part of the evening will be a conversation guided by Alexandre BEJAOUI (French Founders) and featuring:

  • Emmanuel TEXIER, LFSF Head of School
  • Sylvain KALACHE, co-founder of the Holberton School
  • Pierre LAURENT who will speak about Tech addiction, powering down and his documentary project on Kids and Tech in the world

More about the Holberton School

The technology sector is the fastest growing, changing, and evolving industry in history. The mission of the Holberton School is to empower motivated and talented people, regardless of background, age, experience, or financial ability, to succeed in their dream career by teaching students the skills necessary to find a job in software engineering.

More about Pierre LAURENT

In Silicon Valley, devices are an essential part of daily life. But many of the tech titans creating these products choose to power down when they leave the office, following industry giants like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who restricted their own kids' access to technology at home.

Pierre Laurent, who has worked for companies including Microsoft and Intel, said he and his family typically leave their phones at a table to charge when at home. Pierre and his wife Monica became concerned that their three children would miss out on real-life experiences while on their devices so they decided to limit their screen time. Researchers are still learning more about how technology affects kids but some early studies of heavy tech users show potential links to a rise in teen suicide rates, addiction, anxiety and loss of social skills.

PART 2 : CULTIVATING AWARENESS FOR GREAT TECH

How to best teach today’s digital kids how to embrace and fully but safely and ethically,  explore technology is an important subject of reflection for educators, and a concern for parents and students.

Is it possible to grow soulful engineers and researchers?

Beyond teaching students how to code and use technology, it seems important to  conjointly help them adopt a healthy perspective on its use which is an endeavor that should be shared with their parents in order to properly resonate.

The answer may start with training creators rather than consumers.

To help us address this subject, LFSF invites you to meet and converse with two speakers:

Ge WANG

professor | designer | researcher | speaker

"Artful Design: Why We Shape Technology"

How might the shaping of technology make our lives richer and more

meaningful?

This presentation (with live demos) is a journey through the

design of everyday tools, musical instruments, games, and social

experiences.  It is a story and contemplation on how we shape technology

-- and how technology, in turn, shapes us and our society.

Ge WANG will present and sign his book : Artful design.

BUY THE BOOK

We make the world we inhabit. Artful Design is a manifesto of how we shape technology, and a meditation on how technology shapes us in turn. Investigating design through the vehicle of music and technology, the book begins with a simple question: What is design? In pursuit of that answer, Artful Design takes the reader on a journey of discovery — of the nature, meaning, and purpose of design in this age of technology, and the many related questions that arise. Why should we design beauty into useful things? What does it mean to design well? To what extent can (and should) the things we engineer embody our values as human beings? Why does design... matter? This book is for anyone who has ever been curious (excited or concerned) about technology — both what it does for us, and what it does to us.

More about Ge

Ge WANG is an Associate Professor at Stanford University in Music and Computer Science.  He researches artful design of tools, toys, games and social experiences.  Ge is the architect of the ChucK music programming language, director of the Stanford Laptop Orchestra, co-founder of Smule and designer of the Ocarina and Magic Piano apps for mobile phones. He is a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow and the author of Artful Design: Technology in Search of the Sublime, a comic book about design, technology, art, and life.
