6 LFSF students are attending the 2019 NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in Seattle, Washington. Maeve (Gr9), Arthur (Gr10), Naya (Gr10), Ronan (Gr10), Lea (Gr11) and Camilla (Gr11) decided to embark on this exciting adventure, and meet educators and students from all horizons to better understand how #diversity, #equity, #inclusion and #socialjustice can exist and be fostered at their school, on a daily basis. This enriching experience will allow these future leaders to actively participate and guide the student diversity initiative today and apply their acquired knowledge and experience to their adult life.
The NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders (grades 9-12) from across the U.S. and abroad. SDLC focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community. Led by a diverse team of trained adult and peer facilitators, participating students develop cross-cultural communication skills, design effective strategies for social justice practice through dialogue and the arts, and learn the foundations of allyship and networking principles. In addition to large group sessions, SDLC "family groups" and "home groups" allow for dialogue and sharing in smaller units.
During their stay, they visited University Prep, a Gr6 through 12 independent school in north Seattle to see how other school work at ensuring access inclusion and equity in their students' education experience.
