Global Explorers: The International Month Sets Sail at Sausalito

Passport to Learning: Exploring the World at Sausalito

Students worked on a specific country or continent for International Month in SAU

The halls of the Lycée Sausalito Campus have been transformed into a living atlas. This month, our International Month trial run has turned classrooms into gateways to different continents, sparking a wave of curiosity and creativity across all grade levels.

From the savanna of East Africa to the bustling streets of Tokyo, our students are embarking on a world tour without ever leaving the school grounds.

A Map of Our Journey

This initiative is structured by "cycles," with each grade level diving deep into the culture, art, and geography of a specific region. Here is where our students have traveled so far:

Grade Level   Continent    Featured Countries/Focus
PK3-4   Asia    Japan, China, and Nepal
Gr1   Africa    Kenya and Madagascar
Gr2   Australia    Wildlife and the Didgeridoo
Gr3   North America    The 50 U.S. States
Gr4   Europe    Denmark
Gr5   South America    Brazil

Hands-On Heritage

The learning goes far beyond textbooks. In the Australia unit, students crafted baby koalas from cardboard tubes and learned how termites hollow out wood to create the traditional didgeridoo. Meanwhile, those studying Africa practiced the traditional jumping dances of the Masai tribe, a favorite activity that the younger students jokingly compared to "jumping on a trampoline."

“Incorporating different countries into the classroom and having both teachers work together through French and English bilingualism is a fantastic way to open our students' minds.”

In the Asia-focused classrooms, students practiced the delicate art of Chinese calligraphy, writing their own names in characters to make the cultural connection personal and lasting.

The School Quilt: A Tapestry of Diversity

A quilt for International Month in SAU

A centerpiece of this initiative is the School Quilt Project. Students and staff members were given quilt templates to illustrate what makes them unique, drawing their families, favorite cultural foods, and the various languages they speak.

“Our Diversity Quilt, created by students and staff, beautifully represents the unique backgrounds and shared spirit within our community.”

These individual squares have been joined together to create a massive visual representation of our school’s diversity. Look out for these quilts as they go on display in both school buildings before the upcoming vacation!

Looking Ahead: Internal Visit Day

While this year serves as a successful "trial run," the excitement is building for the first week of April. During this time, they will host an Internal Student Visit Day, where classes will "travel" to neighboring rooms to learn from their peers.

Hilda Pereira, who is leading the initiative as the DEIB Coordinator on Sausalito campus, hopes to expand this tradition in the coming years by inviting parents to join the festivities through dance performances, presentations, and storytelling.

Two Molieres for FIN FIN ET FIN

The show 'Fin, Fin, Fin,' which graced our TLF stage in March, just won two Molières, France's most prestigious theatre awards: Best Comedy and Best Male Revelation for Lancelot Cherer. Our artistic director Frédéric Patto was there to celebrate! He spotted some familiar faces: among them, Alex Vizorek, who opened our season on the TLF stage, was the evening's MC! Bravo!
