HAPPENING NOW: CAMPS Versailles
Camp Versailles started on Monday with about 70 campers!
On Wed. the older campers (K-11) visited the Fioli Gardens in Palo Alto, a beautiful "jardin à la française". There, our campers learned about this famous style of garden based on symmetry and the principle of imposing order on nature. It was an ideal and practical introduction to the Gardens of Versailles designed during the 17th century by the landscape architect André Le Nôtre for Louis XIV and widely copied by other European courts. Children explored the fountains, pools, stairs, paths, and bricks of the 100-year-old estate. They enjoyed the closed walled garden, the 'basin' with sculptures, and while in the chateau, listened to a piano concert, and admired the chandeliers and majestic staircases. Finally, in amongst the magnificent gardens, our campers enjoyed lunch, much like the Sun King (le Roi Soleil) and the royal court did in Versailles.
