Curriculum in the International Track

This course supports students as they transition from elementary to middle school. Students will develop critical reading skills as they go beyond reading for plotline only and start identifying major themes, tone and common threads between texts as they read. They will begin to form arguments and make claims about the literature, providing textual evidence to support their claims. 

They will explore themes of journeys, identity, overcoming obstacles.  

Key texts include The Odyssey by Homer, Charles Lamb’s Tales of Shakespeare Tales, Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer.

Students will write creative short stories, poetry, journal entries and short essays. They will also create podcasts and do various artistic projects.

In Grade 7 Language and Literature, students deepen their analytical and writing skills as they explore themes of growth, resilience, and the human desire for freedom. Through key texts such as The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed  and The Pearl by John Steinbeck, students engage with the IB MYP concepts of identity, perspective, and transformation. The Coming-of-Age cycle introduces characters navigating personal and societal challenges, while the exploration of utopian and dystopian worlds, as well as historical oppression, encourages critical reflection on global contexts like human rights, conflict, and community. Through literary analysis, students examine how authors use language and structure to evoke emotion and convey complex ideas. Writing assignments and creative projects challenge learners to develop sophisticated arguments, craft compelling narratives, and reflect on universal themes, building the skills necessary for both academic and personal growth.

In Grade 8 Language and Literature, students explore the complexities of identity, power, and social justice through the analysis of key texts such as Animal Farm by George Orwell, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Students investigate how authors use literary techniques to challenge societal norms, represent diverse viewpoints, and address themes of inequality and resilience. Through close reading, critical discussions, and creative responses, learners develop their ability to analyze language, structure, and context, enhancing their skills in interpretation and communication. Interdisciplinary links to history and civics deepen their understanding of global contexts, such as fairness and development, fostering empathy and critical thinking as they connect literary themes to real-world issues. Key texts include Family Style by Thien Pham, Antigone by Sophocles, Manmade Monsters by Andrea Rogers, and a unit on nature poetry. Students will analyze texts across genres, expanding their vocabulary for discussing form, style, and genre. They will refine their writing skills through analytical essays, engage with creative projects, and apply their insights in ways that reflect their personal experiences and artistic voices.

Emphasizing process and revision, this course encourages students to build strong academic habits by reflecting on and improving their work. Assignments will include essays, oral presentations, creative writing, and research projects. By the end of the course, students will have honed their writing, critical thinking, and analytical skills, preparing them for both the academic and social challenges of high school.

Building on the skills from 9th grade, this 10th grade IB course challenges students with more complex texts and advanced themes, preparing them for the IB Diploma Program. The focus shifts from individual identity to collective identities, exploring societal structures, power dynamics, and community roles.

Key texts include Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, There There by Tommy Orange, and contemporary creative nonfiction. Students will engage with these texts to explore themes of power, freedom, and identity, while refining their ability to analyze and discuss sophisticated ideas.

Students will write longer, more complex essays and take on independent projects, further developing their ability to analyze texts across genres and apply their insights in writing and creative work. Emphasis will be placed on revision, self-reflection, and academic autonomy, building the critical thinking and writing skills essential for success in the IB Diploma Program. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to tackle challenging texts and articulate nuanced perspectives, ready for the demands of higher-level academic work.

Our Ancient World

This course explores world history and geography of ancient civilizations. Starting in the Stone Age, students will explore the Paleolithic era to the agricultural revolution. As students continue to explore early cultures, they will analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of Southwest Asian civilizations.. Students will inquire into how the concepts of time, place, and space play a key role in the early systems and innovations in trade and interactions between civilizations. Moving next into Ancient Greece and Rome, students will learn about democracy, justice, and power and its influence on economy, culture, and governance. The course ends with an inquiry into the origins of Asian River Valley civilizations through the lens of identity and culture. 

Early Empires

This course inquires into the concepts of globalization and power through the Byzantine Empire, Medieval Europe, and Medieval China. Exploring complex systems of governance, social structure, cultural traditions, and the influence of religions as civilizations pushed limits of power and exploration across the globe. Students will examine global interactions through the lens of Fairness and Development between indigenous populations, Europeans, and colonization in the Americas. The course ends in an exploration of the Renaissance, Age of Exploration, Enlightenment, and the Age of Reason as a result of the increased global interactions, reshaping economies, resources, cultures, and power dynamics around the world.

Human Geography

This Human Geography course looks at how human activity is organized across space and the ways people interact with their environments. It covers topics like population trends and migration, cultural patterns, political boundaries, agriculture, economic development, and urbanization. Students explore how factors like globalization, sustainability, and industrialization shape regions and affect people’s lives. The course helps students understand how human societies are connected and how geography influences things like culture, politics, and the environment. They also learn to analyze maps and data, applying these concepts to real-world issues like migration, urban growth, and development challenges.

World History & Global Politics

In 10th grade World History & Global Politics, students explore the history of the world from the Renaissance to today, focusing on key events and movements that have shaped the modern world. They study the rise of European powers, the spread of Enlightenment ideas, and the impact of major revolutions in America, France, and Latin America. The course also covers the causes and effects of the world wars, imperialism, and the development of different political systems. Students look at the Cold War, decolonization, and how global power has shifted in recent decades. They also examine today’s global issues, such as human rights, climate change, conflicts, and economic inequality, and learn about the role of international organizations. Overall, the course helps students understand how world events are connected and how political decisions affect global society.

OVERVIEW

This course explores a new language, French, in order to acquire comprehension,  speaking, reading, and writing skills. The students will learn how to introduce themselves and present their close environment (school, family, countries of origin). They will reflect on specific strategies to learn a new language and will discover the French language from a global perspective (francophone countries around the world). We will discuss everyday life and routines, from food, hobbies to traditions, while keeping a multicultural approach.

Over the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in several projects with the advanced group. They will study French graphic novels alongside their English translation in order to compare the languages.

Overview

This course will strengthen oral and written comprehension and expression skills in French through various topics that allow for global reflection, such as immigration, environment, solidarity, tourism, and education. Students will also have the opportunity to study Francophone poems and short stories, as well as articles from French magazines. We will also work on cultural diversity in various artistic fields such as theater, music, and visual arts. 

They will have opportunities to participate in story-telling with the younger students from the primary campus.

Overview

The French Language Acquisition course at the proficient level program is designed for students who have already achieved a high level of fluency in French. This course focuses on refining linguistic skills, expanding vocabulary, and deepening cultural understanding, all while further enhancing students' ability to communicate confidently and accurately in a variety of contexts. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Overview

Grade 7 introduces students to the dynamic interactions within Earth systems, matter, and ecosystems while emphasizing change and systems. Students study the cycling of Earth's materials, evidence of plate tectonics, and geoscience processes, connecting these concepts to global contexts like natural resource distribution. They investigate the organization of matter from atoms to organisms, and conservation of mass in physical and chemical change, linking chemical principles to real-world situations. Studies of ecosystems focus on biodiversity, resource availability, and energy cycling, with an emphasis on global contexts like sustainability and stewardship. Through hands-on experiments and collaborative projects, students design solutions to minimize human impact on Earth’s systems, reinforcing their understanding of science as a tool for addressing complex environmental challenges.
 

Overview

In Grade 8, students explore physical and Earth sciences, investigating topics like motion, stability, and waves. They study lunar phases, eclipses, gravity, and geologic timescales, fostering an understanding of relationships and scale. Motion and stability concepts incorporate Newton’s laws, while energy studies focus on kinetic and potential energy as well as forces like magnetism and static electricity. Students investigate wave properties such as amplitude, reflection, and the benefits of digitized signals for communication, connecting to scientific and technical innovation. Concluding with population changes and their environmental effects, students apply their knowledge to global contexts like development and sustainability. They design solutions to minimize the impact of human activities on the environment and on biodiversity. , emphasizing science's role in addressing societal issues.

Overview

In Grade 9, students will explore Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, with the integration of Earth Science utilizing the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and the California Science Framework. Students expand their scientific understanding by investigating the composition of matter, energy systems, and ecological interactions. They study atomic interactions, chemical properties, and conservation of mass, applying evidence and systems thinking. Energy studies emphasize transfer, transformation, and efficiency, linking these concepts to real-world applications. Students focus on chemical reactions like photosynthesis and digestion, reinforcing the cycling of matter and energy. They also examine interactions between organisms, resource availability, and biodiversity, applying these concepts to environmental challenges. By analyzing solutions to climate change, resource management, and sustainability, students connect science to global challenges through interdisciplinary inquiry.

Overview

Grade 10 expands on Biology, Chemistry and Physics in preparation for the study of one (or two) of these disciplines in the Diploma Program. Students examine astronomical phenomena and geologic timescales, emphasizing relationships and scale. They explore motion and stability through Newtonian mechanics and real-world problem-solving. Studies highlight energy transfer, wave properties, and technologies for communication, linking these concepts to scientific and technical innovation. Biological investigations include heredity and genetic variation, followed by studies of evolution to explore the unity and diversity of life. By addressing environmental issues and the role of science in societal decision-making, students prepare for advanced studies and develop a comprehensive understanding of global contexts, such as innovation, sustainability, and human development.

Algebra II, Advanced Geometry, Trigonometry

Grade 9, emphasizes the integration of geometric reasoning, advanced algebraic techniques, and trigonometry, fostering a deeper appreciation of mathematical form and systems. Students investigate properties of shapes, solve complex problems involving quadratic equations, and explore real-world applications of trigonometric ratios, tying mathematics to global contexts like architecture and engineering. By engaging in mathematical proofs and advanced modeling, learners build their ability to reason abstractly and construct logical arguments. 

Pre-Calc, DP prep

Grade 10 challenges students with a rigorous exploration of advanced mathematical concepts, including higher-order algebra, detailed trigonometric analysis, and an introduction to calculus. Students solve intricate problems involving exponential and logarithmic functions, investigate the behavior of quadratic and cubic functions, and engage in mathematical modeling to connect abstract concepts to real-world phenomena like population growth and physics. By delving into advanced geometry, vector analysis, and statistical reasoning, learners deepen their analytical skills and develop a comprehensive understanding of mathematical systems. Emphasis on proofs, complex problem-solving, and logical reasoning prepares students for higher-level mathematics and its applications in fields like science, technology, and engineering.

Students in Grade 7 will develop their skills and resources to enhance their motor skills, improve effectiveness, and foster success in the following domains: Fitness, Dance, track, Handball-Basketball, and  'parcours". They will learn about how to manage their physical and social lives to ensure safety for themselves and others, maintain health, develop a positive self image, and build healthy relationships with others. Students will also enrich their understanding of the diverse forms of cultural traditions and human expression in sports and the arts.

Students in Grade 8 will develop their skills and resources to enhance their motor skills, improve effectiveness, and foster success in the following domains: Volleyball, acrobatics-gymnastics, pickleball, Fitness, and track. They will learn about how to manage their physical and social lives to ensure safety for themselves and others, maintain health, develop a positive self image, and build healthy relationships with others. Students will also enrich their understanding of the diverse forms of cultural traditions and human expression in sports and the arts.

Students in Grade 9 will develop their skills and resources to enhance their motor skills, improve effectiveness, and foster success in the following domains: Volleyball,  climbing, table tennis, and collaboration games. They will learn about how to manage their physical and social lives to ensure safety for themselves and others, maintain health, develop a positive self image, and build healthy relationships with others. They will learn about how to manage their physical and social lives to ensure safety for themselves and others, maintain health, develop a positive self image, and build healthy relationships with others. Students will also enrich their understanding of the diverse forms of cultural traditions and human expression in sports and the arts.

Building on foundational skills, Grade 7 students explore artistic and cultural expression with a focus on well-being and advocacy through the arts.

Visual Arts 7

Students begin by exploring the art of patterns and zentangles as a means of self-expression and mindfulness. They progress to creating realistic art using colored pencils, drawing succulents with water drops, and engaging in scientific botanical illustration. The course culminates in advocacy art projects that raise awareness about social issues.

Music 7

In Grade 7 Music, students study various musical forms while continuing to develop their ukulele skills. They explore a wide range of genres and historical periods, with a particular focus on the music culture of New Orleans in preparation for their grade-level trip. Students are encouraged to further develop their imagination and compose their own music. They also take part in composing music, sound effects, and narration for short films, applying their creative abilities in multimedia contexts.

Grade 8 students explore the intersection of cultural art forms and modern design principles.

Visual Arts 8

Students begin by examining silhouettes and Kirigami (paper cutting art), creating narratives that depict emotions, historical events, or literary pieces using black paper, watercolor, or chalk pastels. The second unit introduces students to Bauhaus design principles, inspiring geometric textile patterns.

Music 8

Students expand their understanding of extended musical forms, transitions, codas, and harmonies. They continue to develop their ukulele playing by learning more complex chords and refining their technical skills. The curriculum encourages creativity through exploration of diverse genres and historical periods, fostering a deeper connection to music composition. Students work on composing more complex and longer pieces, incorporating sound effects and narration for silent films from the early days of cinema.

High school students engage in advanced artistic exploration, preparing for IB DP Art through personalized projects.

Visual Arts 9/10

Students begin with 3D design concepts and paper sculpting techniques, culminating in an altered book sculpture. They then work on self-selected art pieces and maintain a reflective journal documenting their artistic practices, preparing them for the Diploma Programme.

Music 9/10 

Students create soundscapes representing cities through self-composed music and sound effects. They continue to enhance their ukulele skills by learning complex chords and advanced techniques. The curriculum includes an in-depth exploration of various genres and historical periods, with a special focus on the American jazz era, culminating in writing and performing a 12-bar blues song with lyrics. Additionally, students incorporate musical elements into slam poetry in their language acquisition course, blending cultural influences with their musical compositions.

Students start by exploring material families, ceramics, and historical constructions, learning about the theorem of Archimedes and concrete boats. The second unit focuses on integrating mechanical systems, where students create wooden automata using gears, cranks, Tinkercad, and a laser cutter, applying physics and engineering principles. The third unit involves designing a modern concrete lamp with microchips and neopixels, learning Python coding for dynamic light sequences. In the final unit, students design a water diffuser for a smart flower pot, using graphic tools for object design analysis. This curriculum equips students with multidisciplinary design skills and creative problem-solving abilities.

In the first unit, students will use Tinkercad and a laser cutter to design parametric furniture and create a giant eco-friendly dollhouse decorated with all these creations. The second unit will focus on robotic components, where students design a robot piggy bank using C language, servomotors, sonic sensors and upcycle a Pringles box. The third unit covers the history of the transistor and combinatory logic, using Logic.ly to design electronic systems with gates. The final unit introduces biomimicry, encouraging students to design an innovative object inspired by nature. This curriculum integrates technical skills, creativity, and sustainability.

Students develop green architecture skills using SketchUp to recycle containers for eco-friendly farm utilities and permaculture landscapes. The second unit focuses on designing a whimsical timber frame cabin with Autodesk Fusion and constructing it using CNC-cut elements and settlers' joinery techniques. In the third unit, students create a wearable device integrating microchips, sensors, and actuators, programmed in Python. The final unit emphasizes engineering science analysis with various IoT devices, providing hands-on experience with emerging technologies.
